underwater world

There are more than 700 species of fish in the Mediterranean.

With an area of 2.5 million km², it is about five times the size of the North Sea and reaches a maximum depth of 5,267 m with the Calypso Deep. Some of the fish species of the Mediterranean originate from the North Atlantic Ocean and have migrated across the Path of Gibraltar. Heat-loving species, which originate from the tropics, occur mainly in the eastern part or are coastal inhabitants. Some of these species, such as the wrasse, the sea-buckthorn, and the sea-pea, have migrated from the tropical Atlantic, while others, such as the common Bilay, the pufferfish, and the great pipefish are of Indo-Pacific origin. Since the construction of the Suez Canal, almost 100 species of fish have migrated from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. Globally distributed species that are also found in the Mediterranean like the great white shark and the blue shark and the bluefin tuna. (SOURCE: Wikipedia)
