Our first self-led PADI IDC in Cyprus: experiences, successes and important tips for future instructor candidates

In 2026, we at Cyprus Diving Centre reached a special milestone: For the first time, we were able to conduct a PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) under the direction of our own PADI Course Director Daniel “KID” Kistler .

This course marks the next step in the development of our dive center and our professional training in Cyprus. At the same time, it was a valuable experience that provided us with many insights into how future IDC candidates can better prepare for the course and the subsequent Instructor Examination (IE).

Building on IDC's existing experience

Although this was our first self-run IDC, we are by no means newcomers to the field of instructor training.

Two successful IDC programs took place at Cyprus Diving Centre last year. These were led by renowned PADI Course Directors Chris Heitkemper and Sascha Koppitz . Working with both Course Directors allowed us to gain valuable experience in organizing and conducting instructor training.

With the successful completion of this year's IDC under the leadership of Daniel "KID" Kistler, we have now taken the next important step and successfully established our own instructor training program.

An international group with a common goal

A total of six candidates participated in our first self-managed IDC:

• 3 participants from Switzerland

• 1 participant from Austria

• 1 participant from Germany

• 1 participant residing in Cyprus

Despite their different backgrounds and experiences, all candidates shared the same goal: to take the next career step in the diving industry and become PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors.

The international composition of the group ensured an exciting exchange and a great team atmosphere throughout the entire program.

The result: Five out of six candidates pass the IE directly.

We are particularly proud of the result of our first self-conducted IDC:

Five out of six candidates passed the subsequent PADI Instructor Examination (IE) on their first attempt.

Unfortunately, the sixth candidate failed to pass due to the theoretical parts of the exam.

Of course, we would have liked to see all six participants successfully complete the IE. Nevertheless, this result confirms an important observation we made throughout the entire IDC:

The biggest challenge for many candidates lies not in the water, but in the theory.

Theory is often underestimated.

Many prospective instructor candidates understandably invest a lot of time in their practical skills before the IDC begins:

• Demonstration skills in water

• Rescue skills

• Diving skills

• Presentation techniques

These areas are important and a crucial part of the course.

However, our experience shows that theoretical preparation often receives too little attention. Candidates whose Divemaster training was some time ago often find during the IDC that the fundamentals of physics, physiology, or the application of the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP) are no longer entirely fresh in their minds.

The problem is that during the IDC there is very little time to relearn all the diving theory from scratch.

The training days are intensive and filled with:

• Classroom presentations

• Workshops

• Pool sessions

• Open water training

• Teaching Presentations

• Instructor-level ratings

Those who only start refreshing their theory during the IDC quickly find themselves under additional pressure.

Our most important recommendation: Start with the theory early.

If we could give future IDC candidates only one piece of advice, it would be this:

Prepare for the theory part early.

A solid theoretical foundation not only makes it easier to pass the theory exams, but also helps to better understand and apply the course content during the IDC.

The following topics are particularly important:

• Diving physics

• Diving physiology

• equipment

• Skills and Environment

• Recreational Dive Planner (RDP)

• Diving environment

The better these fundamentals are understood, the more one can concentrate on the actual development to become an instructor during the IDC.

PADI Dive Theory eLearning as optimal preparation

One of the best ways to prepare is the PADI Dive Theory eLearning .

This program allows you to review all relevant diving theory in a structured way and at your own pace. Many candidates discover, even before the IDC, which areas they still have gaps in their knowledge.

Therefore, we recommend that all future participants contact us as early as possible so that we can create an individual preparation plan together.

Individual online theory lessons

In addition to PADI Dive Theory eLearning, we offer individual online theory lessons.

We work specifically on the topics that, based on experience, pose the greatest challenges. Together, we can clarify any open questions, work through exam questions, and ensure that the theoretical foundations are mastered well before the IDC begins.

This personal preparation has proven particularly beneficial for candidates who completed their Divemaster training several years ago or who feel unsure about certain theoretical topics.

A successful start for the future

Our first self-led PADI Instructor Development Course was a complete success for us.

We are particularly proud not only of our high success rate in the Instructor Examination, but also of the development of each individual candidate throughout the program. Watching experienced divemasters transform into confident future dive instructors is one of the most rewarding aspects of our work as instructors.
