The Mediterranean Sea around Cyprus:
underwater world
What is there to see in the Mediterranean around Cyprus?
The Mediterranean Sea is home to over 700 fish species. With an area of 2.5 million km² , it is about five times the size of the North Sea and reaches a maximum depth of 5,267 m at the Calypso Deep . Some of the Mediterranean's fish species originally come from the North Atlantic and migrated through the Strait of Gibraltar . Warm-water species originating from the tropics are found primarily in the eastern part of the sea or are coastal inhabitants. Some of these species, such as wrasse, wrasse , and peacock wrasse , migrated from the tropical Atlantic, while others, like the greater sea bream , pufferfish , and pipefish, are of Indo-Pacific origin. Since the construction of the Suez Canal, almost 100 fish species have migrated from the Red Sea into the Mediterranean. Globally distributed species that are also found in the Mediterranean include the great white shark , the blue shark, and the bluefin tuna. (SOURCE: Wikipedia)
